Twelve months ago we were putting our feet up after a hard year of production on Good Grief.  A year later and we’re putting our feet up after an exciting year of festivals, screenings and awards.   We’re so pleased about how Good Grief has been received by audiences all across the world, from local favourites St Kilda Film Festival and the Melbourne International Animation Festival, to Brooklyn Film Festival in the United States, Dok Leipzig and the Hamburg Short Film Festival in Germany, to Animanima in Serbia and even Animpact in Japan, Korea and China.

We’ve screened in ten countries at 17 festivals and have picked up five awards and several prestigious nominations. We have done radio interviews, spoken at conferences and loitered around at the odd festival and awards night.  During our final screening for the year at the Made in Melbourne Film Festival, we were even chased down and asked for a hug – it doesn’t get much better than that. One of the hidden side benefits of film-making is the sheer volume of new friends and relationships forged at screenings and events – and we’ve made some wonderful connections this year.

What has made all the effort worthwhile are the emails and feedback we get from people who have seen the film and feel compelled to get in touch.  We’re thrilled that the stories we have shared have been useful, inspiring, educational and food for thought. We’re looking at setting up a distribution agreement with a leading grief education body, and hope to be able to share more of this with you in the new year. Keep your ear out for our announcement in early 2014 about a touring schedule for schools & educational screenings.

From Fi & Jonno, wishing you the best for the holiday season. We hope you’re spending it with the people, pets and things that matter most to you.

Screenings galore and more

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of being interviewed by the talented Elle and Carolyn of Pozible.  They came over, we chatted about crowdfunding Good Grief, Gomez stuck his nose in everything and we all ate cupcakes. Good times.

As an Ambassador to the Pozible network I’m very happy to pass on my experience and advice about how the campaign for Good Grief went, and what was involved. You can grab some of my hot tips over at GiveMeABreak, an arts blog run by my good friend Christie W of Animo studios.

Good Grief has been rolling along very nicely and we’re getting accepted into festivals the world over. What’s even better is some of these are our A-list preferences and I couldn’t be more excited to be a part of such an amazing collection of film screenings. From St Kilda and MIAF to Hamburg and Brooklyn, we’re going places! Head over to the screenings page for detailed info on where and when to catch the film on the big screen.

Wrapped up

The dust has settled a bit since we finished up on production, and I thought I’d pen a few notes before the memory fades and I move on to less exciting projects such as finding rent money and figuring out where to put all this leftover plasticine.

I’m really happy with how the film has turned out. I think that there’s been a really solid realisation of my initial idea, which has of course grown organically since I first put it out there in February. From the initial character design to the overall look and feel of the piece, Good Grief has been a very satisfying exercise in careful planning and considered artistic choices. I have certainly learned a lot more about my own practice and peccadilloes as an animator, and have a new list of things to watch out for on the next project.

We’ve opened up shop

We have a limited range of greeting cards, postcards and iphone cases available to buy through RedBubble. All profits from these sales go directly towards our film’s post-production budget. What a rad idea for a Christmas present!

Andrew celebrating the wrap with some ‘Crazy Chicken’ hooch left over from the set of The Batchelor Experience

Shooting officially wrapped up last Wednesday as I frantically snapped our last few shots for the Good Grief credits and title plates. It was an epic end to an epic journey, and I’m a little bit sad not to be spending all my time with my little plasticine buddies any more. Still, it’s been an enormously rewarding experience for me as an animator. I really felt that I hit my stride as far as animating went in the latter few weeks of shooting – isn’t that always the way? My next film will surely benefit from the practice. And I think I’m going to benefit from spending some time in this sunshine that suddenly appeared out of nowhere.

Good News

We had some of the nice folk from Aunty in the studio a few weeks ago to film a piece about Good Grief for the ABC TV evening news. Here’s the clip!

We made it!

On Tuesday night we reached the all-important 100% goal for our Pozible campaign. This is how we feel about it all…

Talk to the plants

Aug 28, 2012   //   by Fi   //   Blog, diary, news, pozible, production, puppets  //  No Comments

Well I spent most of last week constructing a fake vegetable garden in the studio, then spent my weekend planting out a real one at home… there was a wise thing someone once said about art imitating life but I seem to be getting it a bit mixed up.

Shooting for Spangle the Boston Terrier wrapped up and I couldn’t be happier with what we’ve got. The daily rushes (or slows as they should be called when you’re dealing with animation) look fantastic, and Spangle really comes to life. He has such a sorrowful story to share but there’s so much to gain from it. I have to thank my good mate Dan for being so honest and open with us about the loss of both of his parents.

The Thank You Experience

Well we’re just eight days into the fundraising for Good Grief and so far have amassed an eye-popping $3080 in pledges. I wanted to find a way to thank everyone who has contributed so far, but I am sitting on my pennies for boring things like food and rent – but what I DO have to give is what you’re here for – animation!

You can’t crowdfund without a crowd

Always hug your dinosaur

Always hug your dinosaur

It’s been an incredible week. On Monday we launched our Pozible fundraising campaign in order to shore up a post-production budget for the film.  We thought we’d be struggling to make it over the line given how tight money is at the moment – but how wrong we were. So many of our generous friends, loved ones and philanthropic strangers have put their hands in their pockets and chosen to help us out – as of this morning we’re sitting on 77% of our target and we’re only four days in. We are so grateful and cannot believe how much goodwill there is out there for this project. What an amazing gift, thank you.
